RAID kontrolér BROADCOM MegaRAID 9520-8I – 8 kanálov, SATA 6Gb/s, SAS 12Gb/s

BROADCOM MegaRAID 9520-8I is an 8-channel RAID controller designed for server and storage systems. The controller supports SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s drives and provides hardware RAID management for multiple drives, improving data availability and I/O performance. It is intended for enterprise environments where reliable block-level storage management and RAID functionality are required for virtualization hosts, database servers and backup systems.

Advantages

The controller offloads RAID processing from the host CPU, enabling consistent performance under load. Support for both SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s devices allows flexible tiered storage configurations and compatibility with a wide range of enterprise drives. Hardware RAID management provides features such as parity-based redundancy, hot-swap capability and improved recovery times compared with software RAID.

Suitable for

• Virtualization hosts requiring reliable shared or local RAID storage
• Database servers with moderate to high I/O workloads
• Backup and archive servers needing resilient disk arrays
• General enterprise storage appliances and file servers

Key specifications

• Channel count: 8 lanes for direct drive connectivity
• Supported drive interfaces: SATA up to 6Gb/s and SAS up to 12Gb/s
• Hardware RAID levels: common RAID modes for redundancy and performance (hardware-accelerated)
• Form factor: add-in card for server PCIe slots (host bus adapter type)
• Management: onboard RAID management and monitoring capabilities via vendor utilities and firmware
• Hot-swap and fault tolerance support for enterprise drives

How to use

Install the controller into an appropriate PCIe slot in a compatible server chassis following the server manufacturer’s service guidelines. Connect SAS or SATA drive backplanes or direct-drive cables to the controller’s ports, ensuring proper cabling for SAS or SATA configurations. Use the vendor-provided management utility or firmware BIOS to initialize physical drives, create RAID arrays, configure caching and set up monitoring and alerting. Verify firmware compatibility and apply recommended driver packages for the target operating system before putting the system into production.

Recommendations

Use enterprise-grade SAS or SATA drives specified for server workloads and maintain regular firmware and driver updates. Configure RAID levels appropriate for the workload—prioritize redundancy (e.g., RAID 1/6) for critical data and higher stripe/striping configurations (e.g., RAID 5/10) where performance is primary. Implement routine monitoring and a tested backup strategy in addition to RAID to ensure data protection.
