HDD Western Digital 4 TB 3,5" SATA 6 Gb/s WD42PURZ-SS

The WD Purple 4TB 3.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s HDD is engineered for surveillance storage, providing large capacity and sustained performance for continuous video recording and playback. With a 256MB cache and a SATA 6Gb/s interface, this drive is optimized for multi-camera systems and 24/7 operation, helping to preserve recorded footage and maintain consistent write performance under heavy loads.

Advantages

This surveillance-class hard drive delivers stable sequential write performance and a sizeable 256MB cache to improve buffering of video streams. It is built for durability in always-on environments, offering firmware tuned for error recovery and workload patterns typical of security applications. The SATA 6Gb/s interface ensures compatibility with modern DVRs, NVRs and surveillance-capable motherboards, while the 3.5-inch form factor provides straightforward installation in standard bays.

Suitable for

• Home and small business DVR/NVR systems recording multiple HD camera streams
• Enterprise surveillance arrays requiring continuous 24/7 recording
• Video archival and storage for security evidence retention
• Replacement or upgrade of existing 3.5-inch surveillance drives

Key specifications

• Capacity: 4 TB of usable storage for recorded video and data
• Form factor: 3.5-inch drive compatible with standard desktop and rack-mounted bays
• Interface: SATA 6 Gb/s for data transfer and system compatibility
• Cache: 256 MB buffer to enhance sustained write and read throughput
• Optimized workload: designed for continuous, high-write surveillance workloads

How to use

Install the 3.5-inch drive into a compatible drive bay and connect it to the host system using a SATA data cable and appropriate power connector. Configure the drive within your DVR/NVR or operating system using the storage management interface, initialize and format the drive according to the surveillance system requirements, and assign it to recording pools or channels as needed. Monitor drive health via SMART or the system's drive diagnostic tools and follow regular backup procedures for critical footage.

Recommendations

Use this drive in systems designed for continuous recording and select firmware or controller settings optimized for surveillance workloads. Maintain proper cooling and ventilation in multi-drive enclosures, implement a retention and backup strategy for important footage, and periodically check drive health indicators to preemptively replace drives showing degraded performance.
